Festive Cranberry and Raisin Twist Bread

Festive Cranberry and Raisin Twist Bread – A Holiday Centerpiece

This visually stunning bread is not only a feast for the eyes but also for the taste buds. Sweet, tart cranberries combined with juicy raisins and a soft, buttery dough make this bread perfect for holiday gatherings. The beautiful twist shape adds a festive flair that will impress everyone at your table.

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • ½ cup raisins
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest (optional for a festive twist)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened

For the Egg Wash:

  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon milk

For the Glaze (Optional):

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tablespoons orange juice or milk

Step-by-Step Method:

  1. Make the Dough:

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. If using active dry yeast, dissolve it in the warm milk first and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm milk, egg, and melted butter. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until a dough begins to form.

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. The dough should be soft but not sticky. If it’s too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour; if it’s too dry, add a tablespoon of milk.

  2. Let the Dough Rise:

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm spot for about 1-1½ hours or until it doubles in size.

  3. Prepare the Filling:

While the dough is rising, mix the dried cranberries, raisins, brown sugar, cinnamon, and orange zest (if using) in a small bowl. The orange zest adds a festive touch of citrus that pairs wonderfully with the sweet and tart fruits.

  4. Roll and Fill the Dough:

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Roll it out into a rectangle about 10×15 inches.

Spread the softened butter evenly across the surface of the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Evenly sprinkle the cranberry and raisin mixture over the butter.

  5. Shape the Bread:

Starting from one of the longer edges, roll the dough into a log, pinching the seam to seal it.

Using a sharp knife, cut the log lengthwise down the center to create two long strips. With the cut sides facing up (so the filling is visible), twist the two strips together, creating a beautiful braid.

Carefully transfer the twisted braid to a parchment-lined baking sheet and shape it into a wreath or leave it as a long twist.

  6. Let the Bread Rise Again:

Cover the shaped bread with a towel and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes, until slightly puffed.

  7. Bake the Bread:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the dough with the egg wash to give it a beautiful golden color.

Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and cooked through. If the top starts to brown too quickly, cover it loosely with foil during the last 10 minutes.

  8. Glaze the Bread (Optional):

Once the bread has cooled slightly, drizzle with the optional glaze made from powdered sugar and orange juice or milk. This adds a touch of sweetness and a festive finish.

Serving Suggestions:

This festive twist bread is perfect for holiday brunches or as an afternoon treat with coffee or tea. It can also make a beautiful edible gift when wrapped in holiday packaging.

The Holiday Experience:

Imagine the satisfaction of pulling this golden, braided loaf from the oven, its sweet and fruity aroma filling your kitchen. Not only is it a delicious addition to your holiday celebrations, but the process of creating this bread adds to the festive spirit. As you twist and shape the dough, you’ll be reminded of the joy that comes from crafting something special to share with loved ones.

Happy baking, and may this festive bread bring warmth and cheer to your holiday table!
