- 1/2 cup milk, lukewarm
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
For the Filling:
- 1 can (21 ounces) cherry pie filling
For the Icing:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water.
- Add the milk, sugar, salt, egg, butter, and 2 cups of flour. Beat until smooth.
- Gradually stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough (do not knead).
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
Shape and Fill:
- Punch down the dough and turn it onto a lightly floured surface.
- Divide the dough into 16 pieces.
- Shape each piece into a ball and flatten it into a disc.
- Place the discs on greased baking sheets.
- Make a small well in the center of each disc and fill it with cherry pie filling.
Bake the Danishes:
- Cover the danishes and let them rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the danishes for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let them cool on wire racks.
Prepare the Icing:
- In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth.
- Drizzle the icing over the warm danishes.
